Mom Darwin

Arrived without a booking, receptionist was lovely and made everything very simple. Towels are $5 and crockery is $10 (refundable). Went to cook dinner and realised quickly a lot of people call this place home. Dirty dishes everywhere and 0 free fridge or shelf space. Kitchen was also warmer than outside and everything needed cleaning again before use. Toilets and sinks were clean but the floors and showers were feral - not the cleaners fault they need to be refurbished (not just paint over mould). Toilets/showers also around 5 degrees warmer than outside. Taking a dump in 40c is grim. Pool was clean and again staff were friendly. I definitely wouldn’t stay here again, but I saved $100 a night and got to smell some things I’ll never forget in my 6 bed dorm.

The best hostel in Darwin by far, I absolutely loved my stay. Kayleigh in reception was welcoming helpful and an absolute great welsh gal. The rooms are very clean and there is a great atmosphere. I met great people here and you absolutely can’t fault the staff . The hostel has everything you need and you’re guaranteed to enjoy.

Great place to stay, staff really helpful, reasonable rates, laid back place would definitely recommend anyone to check this place out if you just want a no nonsense place to stay and you can control your budget because you can cook for yourself.

Terrible beds might as well have slept in a bean bag. Music playing loud as next to our room till 12am window wouldn’t close. Then had people making noise till 3am. Wouldn’t recommend unless you are planning to party every single night.

The goal of this hostel is to party hard: thumping music literally 7 days a week until 11pm at the earliest (seriously, i checked in on a Tuesday and the bass carried to every single room in the hostel). If you are 18 to 21 years old and that’s what you want, this hostel is great for it. For everything else, it is just NOT good. There is no common area other than the area right by the bar/music, so do not expect to be able to sit anywhere comfortable and read a book/watch a movie/calmly talk to anyone. Also, the place is filthy. Bathroom smelled like a barn, kitchen was pretty nasty by the evening each day, rooms were dirty and smelly. The shower doors had gaps so wide that I could make eye contact with people walking by hahahah. Also, NO RECYCLING BINS??? What the hell? Is this the 1970s? Unless I completely missed it somehow, I could not find a single recycling bin, so I had to throw away glass, tin cans, etc. The budget accommodation scene in Darwin is pretty grim, as I doubt the other hostels on Mitchell street are much quieter, and there really are no other options. The staff at MOM however were great, and did their best. Very helpful and accommodating.

The staff are great, but maybe it's just the time I arrived... it was very clique, everyone knew everyone and weren't keen on chatting. Managed to talk to a few but was an up hill fight. First time that's ever happened. Like zero conversations. Check in was a drag, took 50 minutes in a 3 person queue... and they take a picture of you on arrival so if you're barred they can send it around every hostel in the area. (Tbf don't be that guy in the first place)... but that's quite the welcome Also reason why the hostel is so low is because they don't like BYO booze... but are happy to charge backpackers $8.50 for a beer... First and last time I'll rock by this place.

Ya gotta embrace the good and bad. And trust me, there's a fair amount of both, in a myriad of varying aspects! Ah, but it is what it is. Ya gotta take it all in stride, ride the edge, be comfortably uncomfortable, and go with the peaks and troughs.

The staff was really helpful. They have 2 swimming pools, which was very unexpected. They have a good WiFi connection. It is close to the bay, bus lines, and stores. The only downside was the AC and humidity. It was easy to have condensation on the walls or belongings that didn't fit into the locker.

1 is being generous, the room was filthy, damp, dull, and disgusting. The mattresses had mould on them, you had to have the air con on full blast or the condensation soaked the floor, which meant the room was absolutely freezing. People on the top bunks couldn’t sleep with the cold because all you are given to cover yourself with is a sheet. There was no day light in the rooms because of the bunk bed going across the window which was already obstructed from the air con, they had one light in the bed room that didn’t even light room up. The place was full of drug ******* walking around out of their head all day. Anyone and everyone could walk in and out of the hostel. They hosted a rave and welcomed people from everywhere to come which meant we had random people walking up and down the halls to the toilets screaming and shouting and the place was left in a state the next morning, also the smell in the toilet was awful, stunk of Damp dirty bleach, and also ants crawling in the sink.
