Branding Iron Motel

Pros: - Super friendly staff - Close to Cumbres & Toltec Railroad - Clean room - Comfortable bed - Reasonably priced Cons: - No breakfast - No hair dryer, fridge, microwave - Poor TV reception - No ice (machine terminally broken) - Dated furnishings

We came to Chama to go on the Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railway and to visit the local area as I had spent my early childhood there. We had a handicap accessible room on the first floor. It was clean and had a quaint style of design. There were 2 double beds, a chest of drawers, TV, coffee maker and 2 arm chairs. The bathroom was spacious with a taller toilet with grab bars and a shower with a door. There was a shower chair, but no grab bars in the shower. There was no microwave or refrigerator and their ice maker wasn’t working. There was a sign about that in the office so you could get ice from a convenience store, if needed. When we arrived, we couldn’t check in until 4 pm, so we drove around town a bit. There was a variety of restaurants nearby, but most were only open from Wednesday to Sunday. You had to drive by to see who was actually open. Chama is a quaint town with a lovely view of the mountains and the changing colors of the trees was outstanding. I would definitely come back to this hotel.

This used to be a decent minimal motel, but apparently they've given up on maintenance. On this visit we experienced the following: toilet wouldn't flush; no drinkable tap water (two bottles were provided, but it's hard to brush your teeth); TV remote didn't work. No way to telephone the motel, as their phone doesn't work. Nobody in the office to complain to. Rigid 4 PM check-in time, no generous exceptions. On the plus side, at least the rooms are clean, well-lighted, and well furnished.

The ice machine was not working and they should at least reimburse guests for having to purchase ice or at least advise them before booking. The clerk at the check-in was without personality and information. I asked about the ice machine not working and his reply was “it’s from the 70s and am surprised it ever worked.” I asked for a restaurant recommendation, his reply “whatever is open.” The room wasn’t much better than the personnel!

Dirty tub and sink. Door to the interior was difficult to open with a key. Seemed a bit flimsy. Bring your own hair dryer because they do not offer this standard amenity. Sheets were clean and there is parking.

Last time I stayed was 12 years ago. Doesn't seem like anything has changed. Room was very clean and beds were comfortable, A/C was one of the most quiet I've had. This is a basic motel, no breakfast which from the breakfasts at most chains is a good thing. Owner was friendly. Will stay again in 12 years.
