The hotel has been tastefully renovated. Our rock view suite was beautiful, the toiletries very nice although the Memo Irish leather is very masculine. The pool area is nice, the Spa treatments and staff of a high quality, the Greek barman in the Guinness bar was excellent and the food in the restaurant was very good, worthy of its Michelin star, although it’s the first time a restaurant I’ve eaten in ran out of sparkling water. These high qualities were let down elsewhere. The check in is 4pm which I had missed in the communication, and that was fine but I felt like we were inconveniencing the check-in staff by arriving at 3pm. We waited having a coffee which I had to ask for a few times and then the incorrect order arrived, sitting in front of a fire while the same receptionist sprayed air fresher around us, seemed unnecessary to overpower the lovely smell of the logs burning. At breakfast the next morning the staff appeared more concerned about setting the tables than looking after the guests. Again had to ask for our coffee and juice a few times. After breakfast we sat in front of the fire in the entrance room reading. The fire in the quieter back room was not lit. We left as the staff were making so much noise, a manager sitting at a desk behind us was querying prices from some supplier, another two were discussing their rotas for the coming weeks, all apparently unaware that a number of guests were reading in the background. A request for a late check out of 1pm to accommodate our spa treatment times was initially declined and ultimately frostily offered. Finally, perhaps it’s just me but Christmas decoration in mid November seems a little early. We came here from Adare where the beautiful autumnal decor seemed more appropriate.
