The afternoon tea was a birthday present for two people. We arrived early for afternoon tea & were shown into the drawing room. We were the only customers in there the whole time, but one table had dirty cups/glasses on it & wasn't cleared during our time there. We were offered a pot of tea & when it came, the waitress spilled some on the table & didn't clean it up. The tea pot contained two English breakfast tea bags on strings to serve two people. One of the saucers had a chip out of it, which isn't acceptable in a hotel . There was a grubby vase on the table with some plastic flowers in it, these gave the table a tacky look. We waited 30 minutes over our booking time, so went to reception to see when the food was coming. A few minutes later, the food arrived. The sandwiches were unremarkable & the bread was rather dry. The scones were not fresh & the jam was too runny to actually stay on the scones. The clotted cream was also runny & not thick as it should be. As we were eating, a loud fire bell sounded & the door slammed shutting us in the room. After a few minutes of loud noise, I opened the door & jammed it open again. No one appeared to apologise for the bell or to say it was just a false alarm. As the price of afternoon tea is £28 per person, we definitely didn't feel the experience warranted £56.
