We stayed here to explore the area (mostly walking) and to be near the sea. The hotel offers standard and superior rooms, some of which have been partly or fully refurbished by the owner. The hotel is not far from the A35 and is near the sea, but to access it you have to travel down a very narrow and rather twisty country lane. The car park was more than adequate for the numbers of guests during our stay. The main asset of this hotel is its friendly, helpful and pleasant staff. All of the ones we met were a joy to speak to and very keen to make our stay an enjoyable one. I hope they appreciated our thanks to them, as the service we received was second-to-none. The food here was excellent, both at breakfast and lunch/dinner. The breakfast menu is extensive and my poached eggs arrived beautifully done, every time. I can only dream of achieving such perfection at home! The dinner menu prices are reasonable and the 'Purbeck' ice creams they serve are exceptionally delicious. Where the hotel is slightly let down is the uneven standard of the rooms. The bed size in double rooms varies from room to room - some 4' 6" double, some king size and some Super king. Bed size is important to us, and a 'standard' 4' 6" double bed is actually inadequate for our needs. It would be helpful if the hotel informed its guests in advance, at the time of booking, what bed size they will be sleeping in. The second negative item, which stopped me giving this establishment 5 stars, was the unreliable hot water supply. Depending on the time of day and the usage level, the hot water could be either 1: barely warm, 2: just about warm enough or 3: scalding. Having it too hot is not a problem as you can always blend it with cold to give a comfortable shower temperature, but not warm enough is simply unacceptable. Guests come-and-go at all hours, and a dependable supply of hot water should be available 24/7. So, to sum up, an interesting place to stay but not without its problems.
