When every other hotel in Bernkastel Kues was fully booked for the Middelmosel wine festival, we were still able to get a room at the Augustus, which was probably the first warning. It is a strange and austere place on the very edge of Kues, not really walkable from the old town across the river. The interior of the hotel feels institutional, almost like a hospital: cold and impersonal. Aside from first thing in the morning and during the check-in hours of 3pm-6pm there is absolutely no staff working. Our room was very clean, however there were major issues: The bed was very hard with no mattress protector, just a sheet. Pillows were cheap and flat. The shower is not enclosed, so essentially you have a wet room. And the air conditioning that they advertise is a lie--There is no air conditioning. You get one towel, one roll of toilet paper and no room service. The only pro about this hotel is the ample free parking, that's it. So if you need a place to crash for one night and then just want to get back on the road, fine. But don't expect service or comfort here. 1* is for cleanliness and parking, otherwise it would be a zero.

Het personeel is enorm onbeleefd. Ze roepen en tieren naar gasten en een lach kan er niet af. In de kamer is er een dakraam dat niet gesloten kan worden, dus je hebt continu licht in de kamer! Hoe kan een mens dan in Gods naam slapen. We checkten in om 18u10 en dat was een probleem want kon maar tot 18u. Ik begrijp dat dat niet even gemakkelijk is altijd, maar om dan zo “vies” te reageren, is buiten alle proportie. Het ontbijt is slecht. De koffie koeken zijn veel te hard gebakken en het fruitsapmachine geeft 1 vol glas per 3 minuten (geen grap). Waarschijnlijk een truc zodat je minder zou drinken, maar dat is toch alle fatsoen voorbij. Zeker omdat dit de wachtrijen aan het buffet enorm doet verlengen. Er lagen nog haren van de vorige op de bedden. Geloof me, ook voor de ligging moet je het zeker niet doen. Sla het over en zoek een ander hotel in deze mooie streek. Bah! Nooit meer.
