Mulberry Shades was the venue for our two-day AFS get-together. Some 40 (AFSers) of us, including board members, inter- generational participants from the 1960s - overseas delegates, local volunteers and staff turned out for the event. The resort gets its name from the time when mulberry plantations existed here. The venue was selected after due consideration, and after the experience, we are glad to report that we had made the ‘right choice’ in terms of ambience , comfort and food befitting seniors who were meeting each other after close to 60 years. They could not have asked for a better venue for this memorable reunion. Mulberry Shades helps visitors to connect with nature and relax! The pleasing trees, flowering plants, lawns, and green walkways - many of which open up to panoramic views of the nearby serene Nandi hill, make for a peaceful setting - ideal for group activities. The rooms and cottages are of global standards with deluxe, up-to-date facilities and comforts. So were the meeting hall arrangements. There was a large choice of beverage and food items to choose from. The breakfast buffet had a large number of international hot and cold items plus regional/local favorites, made from seasonal and locally sourced ingredients! The variety of tasty multi-cuisine meals served was much praised by both the young and older delegates. Mulberry Shades has facilities for entertainment, leisure, and swimming/sports - all in the open, natural setting. The ‘detox’ and ‘wellness-focused’ features include in-house sauna/steam baths and yoga lessons. On top of it all, we had smiling, courteous, and attentive service right through our stay! As a delegate put it, ‘We could not have asked for a better venue for this memorable reunion’. *To the north of Bangalore International Airport, KIAL, besides an 18-hole golf course, lie several interesting historical, cultural, and visit-worthy attractions, including *the 18th-century summer palace, and fort of Tipu Sultan. This strategic outpost in Devanahalli for the ruler of the former state of Mysore is set amidst villages and farms. Further up is the 9th century Bhoganandiswara temple, * the popular tourist site Nandi Hills. *Interestingly, the areas around the hillock once throbbed with much farming and sericulture activity. The mulberry plants introduced here by Tipu Sultan, set in motion the state’s silk-weaving activity. While the foliage is the vital ‘food’ in sericulture, lesser known is the fact that the plant’s pink, red, and dark purple fruit have several medically proven benefits including the ability to limit cholesterol, improve cognitive well-being…and deliver a host of other wellness benefits, particularly for seniors.
