Be very wary of booking accommodation at this B&B. The Poplar Inn is not affiliated to Banff & Lake Louise Tourism. It is not, therefore, included in their approved list of accommodation. Do check out all the reviews left by other guests. We arrived later than planned. A “for sale” sign was prominently displayed in the front garden. This made us feel apprehensive. There was no warmth or interest shown by the host despite the fact that we had spent a long day travelling. The introduction to her B&B was perfunctory. She told us that breakfast would be at 8.30. When my wife asked if there could be any flexibility with this arrangement given the fact that we had arrived late and were tired we were told categorically “no”. She was only prepared to serve one sitting and we could either “take it or leave it”. No alternative arrangements were offered by the host at this time. She did not inquire as to any food allergies we may have. On arrival, there was an overwhelming smell of cooked vegetables permeating throughout the property. The walls in the property are thin. Throughout the night we could hear other people moving around, flushing toilets, opening and closing internal doors etc. The smell and continued noise made settled sleep impossible. A poorly fitted shower curtain draped over the side of the bath. A couple of thin, well-worn towels had been left out. The bed linen was of a poor quality. One cracked, unhygienic plastic beaker had been left on the shelf in the bathroom that was unfit to use. There was an overall sense of meagreness and lack of investment in the furnishings/fittings both emotionally and physically. No welcome/information pack had been provided by the host. Our thoughts returned to the “for sale” sign we had seen earlier and it’s significance re. our unfolding and disappointing experience at the Poplar Inn. Next morning we met the host and calmly pointed out to her all the reasons why we wanted to cut short our stay at the Poplar Inn. She listened, but her response was one of denial and/or defensiveness. When my wife offered to show her our room and point out the deficiencies our host declined. At one point in the conversation she mentioned an earlier discussion with her daughter shortly after our arrival in which she said “we could have trouble with this one” referring to my wife and her decision to opt out of taking breakfast because of the host’s inflexibility re. timings. This was an extremely unprofessional remark to make in our presence. We suggested that we were happy to pay for one night’s accommodation, but wanted a full refund for the remaining two nights that had been originally booked. The host told us that we would not been entitled to this and reminded us that her accommodation was one of the cheapest in Banff. She often uses t
