Pennyhill Park Hotel and Spa

We had the most wonderful Afternoon Tea experience. Ambience, welcome, food, drink: all outstanding. A special thanks in particular to Ruben for his warm welcome and attentive nature. We will be back!

My husband and I bought a one night stay package, which included dinner in the Latymer restaurant, the spa on the first afternoon and also until 2pm the next day, as well as breakfast. The hotel entrance was beautifully decorated for Christmas and had a welcoming feel to it. After check-in, we were asked by the receptionist if we are okay to carry our suitcases up steps to our room. I looked dubious, so she offered to take mine. I found that quite strange, as if there is no lift, I expected a porter to help us (isn't this a health and safety hazard for the ladies working there? ) Thankfully she carried my case while my husband carried his. It turned out to be TWO long flights of stairs and once we reached the room, we discovered that the bathroom was also up a flight of (quite dangerous in my opinion) stairs! I asked the lady if we could perhaps have a room without steps to the bathroom (we are quite fit for our ages, but one could easily trip if being slightly disorientated in the dark when visiting the bathroom during the middle of the night). She refused without hesitation and simply said the hotel is full. I therefore think it is VERY important that anyone who isn't fit and quite mobile, should take note of this, as we were not asked at the time of booking direct with the hotel. The room was a great size, the bed too, so we had no further complaints regarding the room. The Spa was lovely and clean and we thoroughly enjoyed it on the two half days. The meal in the restaurant was superb, although it was slightly spoiled by the exhorbitant prices of wine by the glass (one small glass cost the same as a bottle elsewhere!). The choice was small and I didn't like the wine I chose. The service was excellent, although the Sommelier was a little overpowering and would stand talking incessantly to a couple next to us who had ordered wine pairing (I think they regretted it, as they weren't really left alone by her much of their meal!). The next day when we checked out, I called to ask for a porter to carry our cases down the two flight of stairs and once again, two ladies from reception turned up to carry our luggage, which made us feel bad for their sakes. I wasn't presented with an invoice at reception, but was simply asked to pay the remainder on my bill. The quoted total didn't sound right, so I asked the lady to run through the bill with me. I still couldn't see it, as it was on her screen, but it turned out that, although we had bought the package which included the dinner (without the wine), they had added £48 for service charges! I had not expected this, as I was not informed when making the booking or asked to sign for this after the meal. I asked her to send a breakdown and copy of the bill to my email addres, which she said she did. It never arrived (not in my spam folder either). My daughter, sister and I had afternoon tea at Pennyhill Park. This was the best afternoon tea we have ever had. From arrival through the grounds to the hotel, and elegant Hillfield Bar where afternoon tea is served this is a luxury experience and a real treat. The service is professional and attentive. The food is of the highest standard. We enjoyed every course .. including the smoked salmon sandwich to the scones to the pecan and pumpkin cake which was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at Pennyhill Park. I would highly recommend.
